Artists have always reached for the best tools available to bring their vision to life, and my work is no different. As technology evolves, my process evolves with it. I’ve traded traditional basswood and dental plaster for 3D-printed resin components that hold razor-sharp detail, and I’ve replaced the “chicken scratchings” of my old hand-drawn blueprints with AutoCAD to generate precise STLs and SVGs. Updating my toolkit isn’t about abandoning the craft—it’s about using superior modern materials to push the boundaries of what is possible in miniature art.
Yet, as the tools of the trade advance, they often become more intimidating, creating unnecessary gatekeeping that keeps newcomers on the sidelines. While my materials have changed, the core mission of this space remains the same: to democratize the process. By pulling back the curtain on the “Wizard of Oz” magic behind modern fabrication, I want to demystify these technologies and prove that creating fine art miniatures is accessible to anyone willing to learn.
